84 head of cattle shipped from five farms had been fed contaminated straw

Fukushima's governmentsaid 84 head of cattle shipped from five farms had been fed contaminated straw. Concerns aboutradiation-tainted beef intensified Sunday in Japan as officials struggled todetermine the scope of the problem and prevent further contamination of themeat supply. The government preparedto suspend cattle shipments from Fukushima amid a growing tally of cows thatfed on rice straw containing high levels of radioactive cesium. The straw was harvestedfrom rice paddies in the prefecture (state) after the March 11 earthquake andtsunami triggered the release of radiation from the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclearpower plant. Distributors nationwidebought meat from the exposed cows, and some has already reached consumers. Major supermarket chainoperator Aeon Co. says more than 703 pounds (319 kilograms) of that meat endedup at 14 of its outlets in Tokyo and nearby prefectures. Between late April andmid-June, customers at those stores bought beef that came from a farm inAsakawa, Fukushima where cattle ate radiation-trained straw, according to thecompany. Aeon says it will protectconsumers by strengthening its radiation testing systems for beef. Senior Vice-HealthMinister Kohei Otsuka said Sunday that the government may consider expandingthe expected cattle restriction beyond Fukushima. "We may need toincrease our response by checking the distribution of contaminated straw,"he said on a national television talk show. His comments came a dayafter Fukushima's government said 84 head of cattle shipped from five farms hadbeen fed contaminated straw. It also released resultsof tests conducted on remaining straw, which revealed cesium levels as high as500,000 becquerels per kilogram at one farm in Koriyama City. That translates toroughly 378 times the legal limit. The new revelation bringsthe number of exposed cows so far to 143, according to Kyodo News agencycalculations. Affected cattle growershave said they were unaware that the national government had issued a warning onMarch 19 that feed stored outdoors should not be given to their animals. AFukushima government official acknowledged that the prefecture did notadequately pass along the instruction to farmers. Local and nationalgovernment officials say they are working to trace the location of thesuspected meat and will improve safety checks.

what is life

 Life Is A Test

It makes for a lot of stress, and we tend to feel that there will be more hard lessons in life。
  Life Is An Adventure

It orients us towards seeing the unpredictable events and circumstances as potentially fun and interesting challenges。
  Life Is A Punishment

It is inherent in some religions, which suggest a punishing "purification" through life as a means to some great reward afterward。
  Life Is A Punishment
It is inherent in some religions, which suggest a punishing "purification" through life as a means to some great reward afterward。
  Life Is An Opportunity
The perspective this creates is one that encourages actions and going after your dreams and goals。
  Life Is A Waiting Room

It is hard to imagine a more passive perspective: we wait for "our ship to come in," for example, or say, "my time will come." We wait to hear "opportunity knocking," or "my turn." Of course, none of these ideas encourage us to take action to make things happen。

Life's a cafeteria

A friend’s grandfather came to America from Eastern Europe. After settling down at Ellis Island.he went into a cafeteria in lower Manhattan to get something to eat.He sat down at an empty table and waited for someone to take his order.

Of course nobody did. Finally, a woman with a tray full of food sat down opposite him and informed him how a cafeteria worked.
"Start out at that end," she said. "Just go along the line and pick out what you want. At the other end they’ll tell you how much you have to pay."

"I soon learned that's how everything works in America," the grandfather told a friend.

  "Life's a cafeteria here.

You can get anything you want as long as you are willing to pay the price. You can even get success.

But you'll never get it if you wait for someone to bring it to you.

You have to get up and get it yourself."

public schools teach the historical contributions of gay Americans

California Sen. Mark Leno (D) of San Francisco, seen here June 28 at the Capitol in Sacramento, Calif., sponsored a bill requiring public schools to teach the historical contributions of gay Americans. The bill passed the Assembly on a 49-25, party-line vote on July 5, and was signed into law July 14.
California became the first state to require that school districts include in their social studies lessons the contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people on Thursday.
“History should be honest. This bill revises existing laws that prohibit discrimination in education and ensures that the important contributions of Americans from all backgrounds and walks of life are included in our history books,” said a statement from Gov. Jerry Brown, who signed the bill after supporters and opponents endured more than a week of suspense.
The bill, S.B. 48, which passed in the legislature on a mostly party-line vote, drew sharp opposition from some religious groups, who raised concerns that schools were promoting what they call an immoral lifestyle and impinging on parental rights to teach their children about sexual issues.
But supporters hail the law as a breakthrough that will give children a more complete view of history and society – and make California students safer.
“Studies have shown that when students report learning about LGBT people in the classroom, rates of bullying decrease by more than 50 percent,” said Carolyn Laub, executive director of the Gay-Straight Alliance Network in San Francisco, in a conference call with reporters this afternoon.
Benji Delgadillo, a senior at San Juan Hills High School, spoke on the call about his experience as a 16-year-old transgender student. “After 3 years of feeling like my school treated me like something that shouldn’t exist or something that should be covered up and not mentioned, I will finally be able to learn in an environment that recognizes the rights, history, and humanity of my community,” he said.
California Sen. Mark Leno of San Francisco, the sponsor of the bill, said teaching students about gay civil rights advocate Harvey Milk is similar to teaching students about Martin Luther King. Both men were assassinated for their advocacy work. “There’s no good reason why we would teach the one and censor the other,” he said.
